What possible outcomes would justify a research project that will have the inevitable outcome of stigmatizing the subjects in a way that may result in serious restrictions on their personal freedom?
No possible outcome could really justify the research and labeling of newborns, but if the outcomes resulted in progression in scientific knowledge and the annihilation of diseases such as Down's syndrome and sickle cell it may be more accepted by society and some medical researcher.

I agree that there is no possible outcome to stereotyping babies. The parents are not happy with the fact that their baby is labeled to become a criminal, and the baby grows up thinking that he is bad and that something is wrong with him. If you are a parent and your baby is said to have "criminal chromosomes", you might treat him differently and restrict his privileges in order to prevent him from being a criminal.
ReplyDeleteWhat about AIDS testing? Should babies be screened for AIDS at birth? What about in countries where the mother could be outcast if it were known that she had AIDS?

ReplyDeleteI think that AIDS testing is acceptable, because it is a disease that can hurt other people, although I didn't do extended research so i cant give you a definite answer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna. It hurst the baby's family and him/her to stereotype him. It's very mean. Even though doctors are just "saying" they are dangerous if this continued people might start limiting their privelages.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna that you can't stereotype babies. They're too young to make assumptions and only under scientific research can you make these assumptions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sarah and Anna. You can't make assumptions about babies because they haven't been in the world long enough.
ReplyDeletei also agree that assumptions can't be made about babies. Reserch should not be done on babies it's wrong unless it will help the child in the long run that is. or it will help them lve a more normal life.
